Multiscale cohesive failure modeling of heterogeneous adhesives

چکیده
A novel multiscale cohesive approach that enables prediction of the macroscopic properties of heterogeneous thin layers is presented. The proposed multiscale model relies on the Hill’s energy equivalence lemma, implemented in the computational homogenization scheme, to couple the microand macro-scales and allows to relate the homogenized cohesive law used to model the failure of the adhesive layer at the macro-scale to the complex damage evolution taking place at the micro-scale. A simple isotropic damage model is used to describe the failure processes at the micro-scale. We establish the upper and lower bounds on the multiscale model and solve several examples to demonstrate the ability of the method to extract physically based macroscopic properties. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Multi-scale modeling of heterogeneous adhesives: Effect of particle decohesion
We examine the microscopic toughening mechanisms and their effect on the macroscopic failure response of heterogeneous adhesives made of stiff particles embedded in a more compliant matrix. The analysis relies on a multi-scale cohesive framework first described in Matouš et al. [Matouš, K., Kulkarni, M., Geubelle, P., 2008. Multiscale cohesive failure modeling of heterogeneous adhesives. Journa...
متن کاملCoupled multi-scale cohesive modeling of failure in heterogeneous adhesives
A multi-scale cohesive numerical framework is proposed to simulate the failure of heterogeneous adhesively bonded systems. This multi-scale scheme is based on Hill’s variational principle of energy equivalence between the higher and lower level scales. It provides an easy way to obtain accurate homogenized macroscopic properties while capturing the physics of failure processes at the micro-scal...
متن کاملFriction and adhesion of hierarchical carbon nanotube structures for biomimetic dry adhesives: multiscale modeling.
With unique hierarchical fibrillar structures on their feet, gecko lizards can walk on vertical walls or even ceilings. Recent experiments have shown that strong binding along the shear direction and easy lifting in the normal direction can be achieved by forming unidirectional carbon nanotube array with laterally distributed tips similar to gecko's feet. In this study, a multiscale modeling ap...

Inspired by the natural adhesives in the toe pads of arthropods and some other animals, we explore the effectiveness and peel failure of a thin viscoelastic liquid film anchored on a micropatterned elastic surface. In particular, we focus on the role of the substrate pattern in adhesion energy of the liquid layer and in allowing its clean separation without cohesive failure. Peel tests on the m...

Extracellular proteins play a key role in generating and maintaining cohesion and adhesion in biological tissues. These "natural glues" are involved in vital biological processes such as blood clotting, wound healing and maintaining the structural integrity of tissues. Macromolecular assemblies of proteins can be functionally stabilized in a variety of ways in situ that include ionic interactio...
